Visit to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Centre Emergency Department
A team from SHP attended the International Healthcare Symposium in Chicago in September 2009 which included a visit this new Emergency Department, which had been recently opened and provided for the consolidation and enhancement of emergency services at the centre for their 70,000 attendances a year.

The main entrance provides a dedicated waiting area with a private area for registration of patients. It has a dedicated triage area with C/E rooms to assess and treat patients.
The new Emergency Department is configured with up to a total of 34 treatment bays including Trauma, Acute Care and Psychiatric rooms. The department has separate entrances for majors and minors to improve patient flows. It is designed through use of specialised treatment POD’s for Trauma & isolation, Emergency care, Psychiatric care and a Fast Track POD for minor complaints. This provides the opportunity to flex capacity according to demand. It also features an integral CT scan and radiology support space to provide critical support services.
Key Lessons Learnt:
- Larger triage area for nurses and doctors to work together.
- Patient registration at bedside, rather than private area off triage.
