South Petherton Community Hospital

SHP was involved in the South Petherton Community Hospital development from a very early planning stage. The initial work was focussed on articulating the clinical brief for the range of services envisaged, developing the functional content and schedule of accommodation required to meet the service needs.
South Petherton Community Hospital will be a centre of excellence for stroke and neurological care for the local health economy and SHP worked closely with the PCT project team to develop the output specification and briefing material to design a state of the art clinical facility for this purpose. The centre will include inpatient beds linked to rehabilitation facilities. It will also provide co-ordinated outpatient care through an integrated Health and Well-being Centre which includes provision of a ‘one stop shop’ facility. Emergency admissions to the primary care unit will be via direct referrals from GP practices, the Out of Hours service, and the emergency care general practitioner service. Proactive management of long term conditions will also be supported through planned admissions to the primary care unit, wherever possible with direct referrals received from the multidisciplinary team.
Once the clinical brief and accompanying schedules of accommodation were agreed SHP worked with the PCT and the building Design Team to ensure that the operational and clinical requirements were delivered in the physical solution. A significant challenge faced by the project was to deliver the requirements within the budget which meant that substantial savings were required on the initial capital estimates. SHP were able to provide a pivotal role in delivering these savings by reviewing the clinical requirements and making suggestions to provide more flexible multi purpose accommodation, efficiently arranged and with greater utilisation which would enable the Trust to deliver the required clinical activities within a reduced footprint.
